I am full of excitement this time of year. In spite of the heat, drenched in sweat, and the cool relief of an air conditioned room – leaves are fading from their bright green to the deep dull before their blaze of color subtly forms then pops. Soon, the hot humid breeze will transform into a light whisper before the sharp edges of winter’s chill creeps in.
The final push of nature’s plentiful harvest gains momentum. Golden rod, silver berries, and jewelweed beg to be gathered and stored. The spines of the sweet chestnuts open and release their treasure from their prickly grip. Black walnuts fall from the high tops of their trees like mini bombs hitting the ground or your head with dangerous force. And the waves of acorns raining down on my metal roof with a deafening sound of battle.
With anticipation, I wait and prepare to gather these riches. This is the year I will share the wealth of my land with those poor souls far away who crave these rare gifts from my mountain. This is the year for Tutu Luv!
